I haven't checked this out but I'm going to say it anyway. Sunny Taylor has won more awards than anyone, ever. It's a plain fact she's won more Whammy Awards than anyone. Over the 11 years the coveted Whammy has been the award of choice of local music awards, Taylor has averaged more than two wins per year. This year she earned three bringing her grand total to 26. But who, apart from Whammy Award Show writers, is counting? Okay, who isn't counting? With wins in the Best Folk/Americana Performer, Best Singer-Songwriter and Best Live Performer/Solo categories, Taylor has continued her dominance. Oh, she's come in second to Mike Conley a number of times and, except for the hissy fits and calls for a recount (not really), she's won and lost with a light and engaging spirit about the whole thing. She's heard (and delivered) all of the "running out of wall space," "gotta buy a bigger house," and "I've got your Whammy right here" jokes imaginable. If there were a Whammy for Best Whammy Recipient, she would win that too. And why not? Taylor's talents are unquestionable. With four CDs to her credit, and a fifth in the works, not to mention regular solo gigs and shows with the Sunny Taylor Band (Bob Bailey, Matt Adams, Dan Willig and Ruben Brenneman) as well as being mother to three young daughters, one begins to wonder if there is nothing she can't do. As if to confirm why she snags the best solo performer award every year, she performed a ditty with her newly acquired ukulele while presenting Brad Etter with his special Whammy. She sang and played "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," (with the correct lyrics), a performance that brought down the house. Let's just be thankful it wasn't the house where she keeps her Whammys.
