It's been a few years since Doc West, the indefatigable Rock 104 deejay, heard his name announced as winner of the Favorite Radio Personality Whammy. In fact, he didn't hear his name announced this year, even though he won for the ninth time. That's because Doc "Rick" West had better things to do. He was living it up in Jamaica on yet another Rock 104-sponsored junket.
Anyone who knows Doc (and what music lover worth a whammy bar doesn't?) knows he would have been present and gracious in his post-acceptance speech interview if he hadn't been jammin' in Jamaica. Just take a gander at his comments from previous years and previous wins:
"Three words: The resurrection of Rock 104. The only thing I could do to surpass being back on Rock 104 would be if I were to plop down and give birth to another human being." -- 2007.
"It's great. I'm always honored just to be nominated. Although I did hope (Whammy Award host) J.J. Fabini would win. He's incredible. He deserves it. He was the only other person who was nominated who is as passionate about music as I am." -- 2007.
"I'm a shy guy." -- 2004.
"Oh, yeah. It's not the money, it's the fun. -- 2000.
"It is that good." -- 2004.
Doc West has been this area's voice of rock n' roll for a generation. Born in Miami and schooled at Ohio State and WCOL in Columbus, Ohio, West moved to WXKE in the late 1970s and immediately made his mark, helping guide WXKE from an amorphous spot on the FM dial to prized, pre-set status. West did this by knowing more about the music he played on air and through endless footwork and appearances off air. It seemed everywhere you went to hear live music Doc West was there. It's a formula that works still. Doc West is Rock 104. He is a nine-time Whammy winner. And he is, as morning co-host Leslie Stone called him recently, "a rock n' roll icon." (Mark Hunter) |
