"It feels sweet," Flamingo Nosebleed frontman Jake Emissions said when asked about his band's first Whammy Award for Best Punk Performer. "[I]t's cool that we won. We always get nominated but we'd never won anything before this year," added bassist Phil Nieswender. "Yeah, I think it's cool that people voted for us," Emissions added. "I think we won this year because we've been playing a [lot] of shows. And that Down the Line show we played last year gave us a lot of exposure." "Yeah, I think we're gonna hang that thing above Jake's toilet," Nieswender laughed. Local clout in tow and a classic Embassy Theater performance in their past, the local punk mainstays are already looking forward. They have an album, titled Headbanger, written and are in the final stages of planning a coast-to-coast U.S. tour. "We're doing our first U.S. tour starting in June. We're doing 30-some dates," Emissions said, "Chicago, Minneapolis, a bunch of spots, then over to California and down to Florida. Then end it in New York City and maybe a show on the way back to town. We've never toured that much before, mostly just the East Coast and the Midwest." "I'm gonna have to quit my job," Nieswender said, "but that's a good thing." "Really, we're not worried about anything ... well, maybe our van," Emissions laughed. "But really, every time we get home from a tour we wish we could've been out longer. It's the funnest thing ever." Before they hit the road the Flamingos plan to record Headbanger, their third record, which they would then tour in support of. "We should have that album coming out soon. We've recorded tracks here and there but we're not sure yet where we're going to actually record the whole thing," Emissions said. "So the album is written, and we definitely want to have it out before we go out on tour." Before heading out from the winner's circle I asked Emissions and Nieswender if their drummer, the notoriously energetic, powerful and party-friendly Turbo, who was absent from the interview, still plays shows in only his undies. "Oh yeah!" Emissions quickly replies. "Well, we ask him not to," Nieswender adds. "I don't know ... he's a wild animal," Emissions says on his way out towards the crowd. "We had to ask him to stop wearing the underwear when we were starting out, but now he does it on occasion." (Greg Locke) |
