Shawn Browning

To some, Shawn Browning is Wretched, the frontman for local horror punk outfit Grave Robber, for whom he specializes in vokills and shovel. To others, he's the founder and face of Shotgun Productions Karaoke and the hostest with the mostest. To anyone lucky enough to have been in the crowd on Whammy night when he got his seventh plaque for Best Karaoke Host, he must have appeared to be one of the humblest guys in town.

"This award really should have gone to Bucca," he said, referring to last year's Best Karaoke Host Whammy winner Bucca Fisher. "She deserves this lots more than I do."

Browning has been in the karaoke business for almost two decades now, focusing his energies on making sure people have a good time, weekend in and weekend out. He said he loves his work, mostly because it's not like work at all.

"Thanks for letting me get away with not having a real job for so many years," he said to his fans, "and thanks to everyone who refuses to take karaoke too seriously, because it's fun. That's what we're in it for, the fun, not the awards."

Perhaps that's the secret to Browning's Whammy success: humility and a keen understanding of what crowds want from the man or woman in the booth.

Browning beat out Fisher, Jay Clibon and Jake Carpenter for the win. He'll be trading his mic and baseball cap in for his shovel and Wretched mask this summer, when Grave Robber hits the road for a tour that will take them to Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, Florida and Maryland.
