Third Frame

It was lucky number seven for the three guys from Third Frame. Derek "Ddlux" Quandt, Ryan "RyGuy" Messman and Gavin "DJ Spot" Gough added their sixth Best Hip-Hop/Rap Performer Whammy to their wall (they also own a Best Non-Rock CD Release Whammys for their 2008's Yum Yum), rapping and rhyming their way to a narrow victory over fellow nominees Hometown Hooligans, Sankofa and Aaron King.

Third Frame have earned their props. They began as a duo 16 years ago when Quandt and Messman joined forces as rap-loving Concordia High School students. Then, over the years, they built their following through pizza and hip-hop nights at Columbia Street West and eventually the release of original material, beginning with a self-titled album in 2000. Gough came on a few years ago as the group's missing piece.

To date, Third Frame have four studio albums to their credit, including the Whammy-winning Yum Yum. They're also looking to put out a greatest hits compilation, with the lofty title of Cumulonimbus, sometime soon. You might be saying to yourself, "Seriously? These guys have been around enough to have a greatest hits compilations?"

Allow me, for a paragraph, to list a few Third Frame singles that have made Fort Wayne's single scene the place to be: "Indiana Boys," "Outta Control," "Sexxxy," "Knotz Landing," "Mar-i-wanna," "Plush," "Paper," "Cloud 9," "Four Fifteens," "Now Stomp." Stopping for breath. Okay. "Tomorrow," "3 Piece," "Brews," "Moon Trees," "Six Nights," "Beat It Out of the Frame," "Futuristick," "Ride," "Why," "Get Loud."

That's really just scratching the surface of these guys' immensely creative, frequently clever, sometimes deviant and always entertaining oeuvre. I could go on listing their hits, but to really get the rest of the story, you have to see them live, mics in hand, hands in the air. (Deborah Kennedy)
