Freak Brothers

It is no surprise that the Whammy for the Best Funk Performer of 2010 goes out to the long-running award winners the Freak Brothers. It was a surprise however, to see only three out of eight Freak Brothers there to claim their award.

"That's the problem with getting married and having kids ... you can't go out to drink at the Whammys on Thursday nights anymore," joked saxophonist Matt Cashdollar.

Having been himself a member of Strut Train and a current member of Unlikely Alibi, this marks Cashdollar's eleventh straight year as a winner of Best Funk Performer. Though he humbly thanks everyone who plays in a band, Cashdollar laughingly admits that Best Funk Performer is now becoming a little bit of a legacy for him. "I don't want to let it go."

Most musicians might take a hard-earned break from their rehearsal and performance schedule after losing count of their Whammy Awards. Though none of the members can remember how many they've won (their guess was upwards of 14), a check of the official Whammy statistics shows that they actually have 17 awards, including Performer of the Year honors for the years 2003-2005. Rather than rest on their laurels, though, the Freak Brothers are moving into high gear as they work hard to completely overhaul their setlist.

"We've already added 15 songs, and by the end of the summer you can expect a complete new lineup of horn-heavy funk music," Cashdollar said.

Looks like bands hoping to make their mark by becoming Fort Wayne's Best Funk Performer of 2011 are gonna have a tough time, as these accomplished musicians keep stoking the fires of the Fort Wayne music scene. Glancing towards fellow horn players, Todd Roth and Brandon Rentfrow, Cashdollar gave a sympathetic nod, "Sorry, Unlikely Alibi. Maybe next year." (Fernando Tarango)
