Renegade

Renegade frontman John Curran seemed almost bashful when accepting his eighth Whammy for Best Country Performer.

He humbly thanked the fans and everyone who's supported the band over its 13-year career, and rather quickly and quietly left the stage.

Of course, when he gets in front of crowds at local watering holes like the Rusty Spur, the Alley Sports Bar and the Neon Armadillo, the modesty melts away and his inner Nashville star takes over. Country music lovers obviously eat up whatever Renegade is cooking. Curran and his mates have taken home the Best Country Music Performer seven times before, this year beating out hefty competition in the forms of Shakin' Bake, Huckleberry Blue and Sugar Shot.

Curran has been at the heart of Renegade since it first formed in the mid-90s. Having seen the act through several lineup and name changes (remember Dakota Sunrise?) Curran is now captain of a steady ship with Rick Durnell on drums, Fred Guild and Doug Gusching on guitars, Jason Seiffert on bass, Ron Trable on keyboards and Carlo Reneger on sound.

"We really stepped up our music this year," Curran said. "There's a different flavor to what we do now. We're doing a lot of different kinds of country instead of being stuck in one style, and we're working on more originals. It seems to be going well. We've been asked to do some showcasing in Nashville."

But don't get your bolos in a jumble, Renegade fans. They have no plans to get out of town anytime soon.

"We still want to continue playing around here," Curran said. "This is our home." (Deborah Kennedy)
