When Sunny Taylor snagged her 23rd Whammy -- let's repeat that, shall we? When Sunny Taylor snagged her 23rd Whammy, she quipped that she and her husband, Jason Berry, might have to buy a new house to make room for her record-breaking Whammy collection.
"I guess I'm just going to have to break down and get a house with a basement so I have a place to put all these," she told the crowd when accepting her second award of the night, that of Best Folk/Americana Performer. "No, seriously, thank you. Thank you so much. I'm really honored and grateful for this award."
By that point in the evening, Taylor and her new band -- Bob Bailey, Matt Adams, Dan Willig and Ruben Brenneman -- had already wowed the audience with a breathtaking set of some of her greatest hits, and she'd also taken top honors in the Singer-Songwriter category for the ninth time. She had a right to talk about real estate.
But Taylor was kidding about the basement. She was serious about the gratitude.
"I've tried to tell myself I don't take these things very seriously, but it really is nice to be recognized for something I love doing," she said. "It's a triple blessing almost. I can write music, perform it for people and be recognized for that. It's a good feeling, especially considering the performers I was up against this year." In the Folk /Americana category those performers included Lee Miles, Possum Trot Orchestra, Marnee and Clusterfolk, and in the Singer-Songwriter section, Lee Miles, Marnee, Mike Conley and Jason Paul.
She was also up for Best Solo Performer, a distinction that went to Mike Conley this year and, despite the fact that Taylor got the silver in that category you woulda thunk she'd won it, happy as she was when the winner was announced.
"Mike's a very hard-working musician, and I have the utmost respect for him," she said. "Hey, if we got together we could maybe have a good shot at Best Live Duo."
Taylor has four full-length CDs to her credit, including 2007's Lock the Door and Leave and two live albums, and said she'd like to record new material this year.
"I don't get as much time to write as I would like, but when I do it just spills out of the pen. I can't write fast enough," she said. "This new band is pretty inspiring, too. I have new stuff I've yet to introduce to them and I have no doubt it will develop well. It's just a matter of finding the time."
Much of Taylor's time is taken up being Mom to her three young daughters who range in age from five to two, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
"We definitely have our rough days, but overall it's a blast. Never a dull moment. Most days I just have to surrender, to stop cleaning and worrying and just have fun with my kids," she said. "They won't be this little and this fun for long. Pretty soon they'll be teenage girls like I was with their attitudes and their issues. Three girls. I think this is what they call karma."
