Spike & The Bulldogs

When the seven members of Spike and the Bulldogs were getting their photo taken with their Whammy for Best Oldies Rock Performer, they had a bit of a dilemma. Who should take the Whammy plaque home? The question wasn't who wanted it most. After eight straight wins in the oldies category, the question was, which guy still didn't have a plaque for his wall?

It's a good problem to have, and it cannot be argued that it's good to be Spike and the Bulldogs. Consider the Whammy night they had this year. Asay and his bulldogs -- Pete Van Bibber on guitar, Wayne Neukom on bass, Bernie Stone on drums, Jim Heimann on sax and Phil McDonald on keyboards-- were charged with kicking off the ceremony, and they did so on a high note. They treated the audience to the kind of set that has made them favorites with crowds not only around town but all over the Midwest where, particularly in the summer, they can be found getting both the young and old alike up and sock hopping for hours on end.

Then they continued their streak as the city's most beloved oldies band, accepting their award from the gracious hands of jazz veteran Francie Zucco and thanking the crowd for their continued support. The competition in the Best Oldies Performer category was formidable this year. Biff and the Cruisers, Nostalgia and the Junk Yard Band made a respectable showing, but in the end Spike and the Bulldogs won the day.

Celebrating more than 25 years together, Spike and The Bulldogs, have six albums in circulation, including Live, 3 Songs for a Quarter, and they're currently hard at work on their newest CD, which they say will be out soon. In the meantime, fans can check the Dogs' website for upcoming shows, many of which are benefit concerts for a plethora of good causes. Talk about your golden oldies. (Deborah Kennedy)
