It has been a defining year for Under the Wake. Not only did they just win the 2008 Whammy for Best New Performer, but they also made a strong showing in the whatzup Battle of the Bands IV earlier in the year. Under the Wake made their way through the wildcard round and into the quarterfinals, where they narrowly lost to eventual winners The Orange Opera. “We made a much stronger showing than we or anyone else really expected,” says vocalist Tyler Bender. “It was a great start to our year.” The band was also nominated for a Whammy in the Best Metal Performer category. “Winning a Whammy is special because the people vote on it, and the people are the ones that matter” said bassist Justin Zych, after accepting the award. “We didn’t think we would win,” adds guitarist Nate Perry. “We were just happy to be able to play at the Whammys and show people who we are. Winning an award was just a bonus for us.” Having just released their self-titled debut album, the future continues to look bright for this young five-piece metal band. Be sure to make your way to Wooden Nickel or one of the band’s shows to pick up a copy of the album in order to see for yourself why Under the Wake were voted Best New Performer by whatzup readers.
