Whatever it is that goes into making a good karaoke host, Shawn Browning must have it in spades. Since the Whammy for Best Karaoke Host first stared apprehensively at the lyric monitor in 2003, Browning and his Shotgun Productions have owned it. This is his fifth encore. So then, what is it that makes for a good karaoke host? “I just try to be personable,” Browning said. “And I pay attention to what’s going on. I have a good knowledge of the equipment, which I think helps put people at ease. But I didn’t think I was going to get the Whammy this year.” Even though it’s a fun job, Browning, who has been at it for 16 years, takes it seriously. He understands that people plan their week around karaoke night, and he does what he can to make that night fun. Anyone who has ever spent time at a karaoke night knows that not all singers are created equal, but Browning does what he can to encourage all comers, regardless of their talent. “I try to make people feel good.” Browning, and many other karaoke hosts out there, seems to make bar owners feel good, too. Karaoke night is a boon to area bars who see crowds flock in to have a good time and be stars for the night. And the popularity of karaoke seems to make packed nights at clubs a sure thing. There are nearly 40 bars and clubs across northeast Indiana with karaoke companies on any given Friday. That’s a lot of karaoke. “Karaoke has been popular in Japan for 50 years,” Browning said. “I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon.” (Mark Hunter) |
