“Great – it’s fantastic,” was Todd Harrold’s typically low key response to winning a Whammy as Best Jazz Performer. Harrold has always let his music do the talking for him, and this year he has established himself with some new musicians and a new enthusiasm for playing music live in Fort Wayne. “It’s really cool that we’re really popular again,” says Harrold, using the “we” fairly loosely since his trios have been constantly evolving, with new people filling the other two slots over the course of many years. “I’ve been asked to play Columbia Street West, and I don’t think I’ve played there in almost 12 years.” He attributes this new popularity and his pleasure in making music to his fellow musicians, Dan Mowan and Will Brown (pictured above). “I’m proud of the guys I play with,” said Harrold. “It’s just terrific working with these guys. They kick my ass. All these years I’ve been playing what I thought people wanted to hear. They’ve taught me that it’s all about energy. I finally realized ‘So I don’t have to play “Me and Mrs. Jones”? Okay, cool.’” Harrold isn’t the only one impressed with how his trio is sounding these days. Musician/producer Alan Evans from Soulive has also taken notice, and the trio will be heading to his studio in Massachusetts to record this year, leaving Harrold to feel content with the direction his career is taking. “Every time I play with these guys, I learn something. Everything just seems to be going really well.” (Michele DeVinney) |
