The Freak Brothers have been winning audiences of old-school funk and R&B at the same time that they’ve been winning Whammys by the fistful. Like many of the classic old funk bands from the 70s – the very groups that The Freak Brothers pay homage to whenever they take the stage – they seem to grow with each year, adding more members and instruments, further developing their sound. In fact, when asked for the band’s biggest accomplishment of 2007, bass player Adam Martin said, “Keeping the number of band members below 12! We are currently at 8 but plan on a few more possible additions.” They’re also planning a new album, one which will likely be released in 2008, just in time for next year’s Whammy consideration. Yet despite their success, the Freak Brothers – which now includes Martin, Brandon “B” Rentfrow, Adam “Rudy” Rudolph, Matt Cashdollar, Dan “Funkappelli” Cappelli, King, Marcus “Flava Flav” Farr, and Kris “Hot Sauce” Miller – seemed surprised by their victory in the Best R&B/Funk Performer. “We’re thrilled,” said Rentfrow. “A lot of people have to come together to make this happen. It’s not just one person. It’s hard to know what to say. It’s just really cool.” (Michele DeVinney) |
