It was a year of changes for longtime singer-songwriter David Todoran, who has built a loyal audience in Fort Wayne and beyond as both a solo performer and as member of popular Fort Wayne bands. But Todoran is also a college graduate with a literary sensibility that extends beyond his insightful lyrics. After years of focusing on music, Todoran took a job teaching at Northrop High School and lists that his biggest accomplishment of 2007. “Teaching English has always been an appealing career option for me,” he said. “Classic literature, poetry, writing, film and music are the raw materials I get to work with each day. Add to that an aspect of performance art and pretty much all of my interests are covered. I also have the pleasure of working with a great bunch of kids and a fantastic group of fellow teachers. Not to mention that after 20-some years of the Spartan life of a singer/songwriter, a steady paycheck ain’t so bad either.” In fact, his work kept him from the Whammy ceremonies, so his wife, Kathy, accepted the award for Best Americana/Folk Performer on his behalf. But when reached for his reaction, Todoran, who is planning a new record and is working with Brad Kuhns on a Latin flamenco approach to some of their songs – was grateful for the continued support. “I’m extremely flattered and I have to thank the readers who voted and the folks who nominated me. It sounds like a category for purists, and I’ve been anything but as of late, so I apologize if I’ve offended any American folk aficionados. Seriously, it was an unexpected, but greatly appreciated honor.” (Michele DeVinney) |
