Mike Conley is no stranger to the Fort Wayne music scene or Whammy Awards, taking home 11 awards coming into this year's event. These awards include Best Live Duo (with John Forbing) in 2003; Best Live Solo Performer in 2004; and in 2005 Best Live Duo (with Chris Dodds), Best Solo Performer and Best Pop Performer. Two years ago Conley released his debut project, My Little Secret. It's done better in sales than Conley anticipated and has almost sold out the first pressing.

"I've had a lot of people ask me when my next album will be released," he said. "My answer to that is that I don't know. I realize it's time for the second. Just bear with me. In fact, I've always wanted to do a Christmas album."

Conley has taken a step towards this goal by recording a version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." The tune got plenty of play locally on 92.3 during the recent holiday season. It can be accessed at www.myspace.com/themikeconleyband. Speaking of The Mike Conley Band, there are no current plans or gigs, but don't rule it out.

"I someday hope to do another show [with the band], maybe a short tour," Conley said. "Whether you're a band or a solo act, gigs are never easy to get. I personally think that there may be more opportunities for solo and duo acts in this city because we can also play restaurants as well as bars."

All in all, Conley is grateful to Fort Wayne, and the support and recognition he's received here. The Whammys mean a lot to him as well. "They're something the magazine certainly doesn't have to do," he said. "I think it's pretty cool that they go out of their way to put on one heck of a show that recognizes the efforts of our artistic community. These are my 12th and 13th Whammys, and it's very flattering." (John DeGroff)
