Spike & The Bulldogs

"We are still doing what we have done for the past 25 years or so," said Val "Spike" Asay of Spike And The Bulldogs.

"That is oldies music, and I mean the vintage oldies from the 50s and 60s. Perhaps there should be a Whammy category for certain decades of oldies. There are good bands in the area playing what they consider oldies from the 70s and 80s. It's all in the perspective, I guess."

Whatever perspective one takes regarding oldies, Spike And The Bulldogs have most definitely carved a niche for themselves playing their particular brand of music. The line-up of the band has remained consistent for the last 10 years or so. Besides Spike on lead vocals, the Bulldogs are Pete Van Bibber on guitar and vocals, Wayne Neukom on bass and vocals, Bernie Stone on drums and Jim Heimann on sax and vocals.

Over the last several years Spike And The Bulldogs have released five albums. All but the two newest, Live Again and Songs From The Vinyl Vault, are out of print, which is a good way of gauging how well they've sold. Spike And The Bulldogs are well known at area fairs and festivals and play the Foellinger Theater for a special event annually.

"We have all types and ages of people who come to hear the band," said Asay. "Mostly those 40 and up. They may bring the kids and grandparents. I think it's mostly because our music is family-oriented, non-offensive, sing-a-long style.

"It's been very special for us to receive the Whammy for Best Oldies Performer, let alone be nominated. This is number five in a row. There's some great bands out there where we've been and I think the competition is really good, which makes it better than great. It's going on 26 years now, so it's a career. We've done some things right and we've had some good breaks and it's all come together after all this time."

Putting another Whammy win for Best Oldies Performer on the shelf definitely proves that there is plenty of appreciation for older music. As the old saying goes, "Rock n' roll is here to stay." (John DeGroff)
