Winners

Shawn Browning has won the Whammy for Best Karaoke Host previously, and described the experience as "winning an award for doing my job. The guys at Steak And Shake don't get awards."

Well, maybe not, but if they had to listen to umpteen drunkenly rendered versions of Garth Brooks hits night after night, they'd be entitled. Browning started hosting karaoke while still in college during the early 1990s. This was a great gig for a musician for whom trying to land a "real job" that doesn't conflict with band gigs is always problematic. This inability to find that "real job" evolved into Shotgun Productions, Browning's own company that has become well known in Fort Wayne and surrounding communities.

Besides himself, Shotgun Productions also employs Leona Browning, Shannon Browning, Bill Browning, Justin Halter and Larry Schmitt. Regular venues for Shotgun include Crickets in Auburn, The Four Crowns in Auburn and the 412 Club in Fort Wayne.

"It's never let up," said Browning of his job. "As long as we don't run out of 21-year-olds I'll always have patronage for Shotgun Productions Karaoke. Karaoke has been going strong in Japan for over 40 years, and I don't see it letting up anytime soon. People love to get the positive reinforcement from the crowd, and I make everyone clap for every singer.

"Thanks for 14 years without a ‘real job,' and I just want to repeat what I said on stage, thanks to everyone for supporting Shotgun Productions." (John DeGroff)
