LiveDuo

Things haven’t changed much for Chris Dodds over the last 12 months. He still plays guitar, he still wears glasses and he still lives forever in the shadow of Mike Conley. How did he describe himself last year after sharing the Best Duo Whammy with the ubiquitous Conley? Something about being a supernumerary nipple on the Conley’s body. Whatever you say Chris.

"I feel the exact same as I did last year," Dodds said. "I’ll ride his coattails all the way."

"I love that guy," Conley chimed in. "I almost feel guilty."

Don’t worry, Mike. It’s not your fault whatzup readers have picked you and one of your partners for Best Live Duo each of the four times it has been offered. At least you’re spreading the glory.

Prior to Dodds, Conley’s partner was John Forbing. Considering who he’s played, and won, with, perhaps it’s Conley who is riding coattails and forming extra nipples.

Consider this: Forbing taught Conley guitar for years. Forbing is a guru among local guitar players, having played in innumerable bands and taught innumerable students in his 30-odd years of playing guitar.

Dodds is no slouch either. As a former member of the Whammy - winning, and now defunct,Go Dog Go, and a solo performer of note, Dodds needn’t feel as though he’s lingering in anyone’s shadow. Especially Conley’s.

I mean, who the hell is Conley anyway? Okay, so he won Best Solo Performer for the past three years, tying with Kenny Taylor in 2003, won the Best Local CD Whammy last year for his release, My Little Secret, and took home the singer/songwriter honor, performs almost non-stop with Dodds, by himself or with the fine band he fronts, drawing from different song lists for each, and placed second to the unstoppable Freak Brothers for Performer of the Year last year. What kind of a resume is that?

Hmmm. Maybe Dodds is right. I guess we’ll just have to wait until next year
