Third Frame have a bit of a streak going. Not only have they won the Best Hip-Hop Whammy for the second year in a row, their No. 1 hit of last year, "Mary (I Wanna)," continues to get heavy radio play, and they’ve got a CD, their fourth, scheduled for release in April.

"We’re really happy about this," Ry-Guy said after the band’s hot set at Piere’s Thursday and after picking up their Whammy. "We work really hard at it. We have been since the beginning."

Third Frame are vocalists Ddlux and Ry-Guy, and beat and scratch man Spot. Ddlux and Ry-Guy have been friends since high school and have spent the better part of the past 16 years working on their music. They started doing parties in basements, and the experience of performing for crowds hooked them. Over the ensuing years they’ve gone through a couple of djs, opened for several national hip hop acts and played out as much as possible, sometimes doing two or three shows a week for spare change and free drinks.

They’ve come a long way since those days. Opening for such acts as Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, Nellie and Sir-Mix-A lot has exposed Third Frame to wider audiences and helped expand their own musical horizons. Ddlux last year said the band is adding more conventional songs to its well-honed rap catalogue. And the change is being met with approval from fans.

Their much anticipated new release, called Frame of Mind, will be released on April 20, appropriately enough.

It remains to be seen whether they can come up with another hit like "Mary (I Wanna)," which topped the local charts and featured 2 Live Crew’s DJ Mixx. But one thing is for certain - Third Frame have hit their stride and found their groove. And after 15 years of working at it, that’s got to feel pretty good.

Third Frame have never compromised or made excuses for themselves. They are out front with their beliefs and their hobbies. There is no need to go into them here. Seeing the band will answer all questions. They’ve done it that way from the beginning. The way they feel is pretty well summed up in their own words: "So here we are love it or hate it but we will not stop making music until our last breaths. So until then we wanna thank all the fans and people who enjoy listening to our music. We love you."
