G-Money didn’t win the Blues Whammy last year or the year before that. In fact, he’s never won it. But Thursday at Piere’s, the well-known host of the Monday night All-Star Blues Jams at Mid City Grill finally grabbed the Blues Whammy from the tight grip of Pop n’ Fresh, who had cornered the prize for the past six years. "I’m speechless," said the usually talkative blues man. And he was. "I’m sorry. I just don’t know what to say. Left Lane Cruiser is great. And Walkin’ Papers. I’m just blessed." But G-Money is no stranger to the Whammy disc, having collected two previously for Best R&B performer. Such recognition comes with no small amount of ambivalence for G-Money. You see, G-Money plays guitar and sings with a kick-ass band called Fabulous Rhythm Kids. Every year he cringes a little because the Fabulous Rhythm Kids don’t get the prize. He does. Not that he doesn’t deserve it. As emcee of the blues jam, G-Money not only has to be able to deliver the blues himself, which he does quite nicely, he has to pick and choose among the throng of talent that shows up on a weekly basis. As it turns out, he does that quite nicely, too. G Money got hooked on the blues and music in general at a young age, listening to records his mother played during parties. He started playing guitar after hearing the Isley Brothers’ hit "Who’s That Lady." During the 1980s and 90s he played guitar with Neutral Zone, the G-Money Band and for a time a few years ago was lead singer for the Joey O. Band. But it was around 1996 at Jimmy G’s Hot Spot on Fairfield that G-Money’s star began to rise. But not his ego. Jimmy Gephart said G Money always had time to help younger players. And as host of the Allstar Blues Jam, he’s still doing just that. Only now he’s got a Whammy to further cement his reputation. |
