The Brown Bottle Band, winners of the Whammy Award for Best Rock Performers/Covers, have gotten a little wackier than usual lately. They’ve taken to giving out plaques and trophies to audience members at various shows. They continue to make friends with just about everybody they work with and have maintained a constant presence in the local club scene.

Since finishing in the final four in the whatzup Battle Of The Bands last summer, the band has had a personnel change. Jon Ross has replaced Rick Weilbaker on drums. Ross is also a member of the band Definitely Gary and played drums on Mike Conley’s CD.

“I’ve been in the band about three months,” he said. “I’ve known these guys for awhile, and they wanted me in the band and wanted to start writing originals. It’s nice to win something. It means a lot.”

The rest of the band - Dan Smith, guitar and vocals; Damian Miller, bass and vocals; and Rooster, guitar and vocals - were pleased even to be nominated for a Whammy this year, let alone three (they came in third for Performer of the Year and were runners-up for Best Live Band). “It’s great to know that people enjoy what we’re doing, and we feel very fortunate to be able to do it for a living,” Miller said. “And we want to thank our fans, especially the ladies, for all their support.”

The Brown Bottle Band have had a few twists and turns in their brief career. They started out under the name Soul Kitchen while still in high school. In 2003, they organized their own concert called Soulstock, and they basically took off from there. They’ve been nominated for a Whammy before, have participated in every one of the RRevolution Concert Series tribute shows at Columbia Street West and finished third in the Battle Of The Bands. A lot of gigging, including regular Thursday nights at Columbia Street, and some near misses regarding public recognition hasn’t dampened the guy’s spirits, though. This is a band that, more than anything else, works hard for their fans.

The guys also have been working on their first CD project. “We’re still plugging away on the songs,” Miller said. “We’ve decided to change directions a little in the way of original material. We’re planning an all-original show for the summer, so the CD will probably be released sometime next fall. The band is dong great. We’ve made friend with more musicians and more bands, and we’re looking forward to the coming year.” (John DeGroff)
