For anyone not familiar with Doc, he’s been a part of radio in Fort Wayne since the 1970’s. He was part of the old WXKE station back then. He’s originally from Miami, Florida, where his parents both worked in radio. He went to Ohio State and worked at WCOL in Columbus, Ohio for a brief stint. “He’s been involved in local music one way or another, either by supporting it or just enjoying it, for years,” said J.J. Fabini, Z94.1’s assistant director of programming “He’s really dedicated to his craft, and he’s sacrificed more than anyone I know just to be a part of local radio. He’s had other offers over the years, but passion and music is more important to him than the corporate side of things. When 104 was shut down, and he helped start Z94, he saw that as a new beginning. He’s happier now than ever before - with his lifestyle changes, he’s really changed.” Indeed, tanned and rested after his recent annual trip to Jamaica, the new, considerably slimmer Doc West is ready for another year and, most likely, another Whammy Award. Doc himself once said in a previous interview in this paper, “I’ve never expected to win any of the other times. If it’s one reason I’ve won, it’s because I’m very passionate about music. It’s all about the musical community. I hope to rock ‘till I drop.” (John DeGroff) |
