Third Frame have had a good year. A real good year. With a No. 1 song on the radio, a relatively new member running turntables, all the band needed was a Whammy. Thursday Third Frame got what they needed.

“It’s awesome,” vocalist Derek Quandt said of Third Frame’s win in the Best Hip Hop Performer category. “It’s been a good year for us so far. To win a Whammy is something we’ve been missing.”

A lot of good things have happened to the band since DJ Spot joined Quandt, aka DD Lux, and Ry-Guy last July, Quandt said. Their song “Mari-I-Wanna,” recorded with 2 Live Crew DJ Mixx , is No. 1 on local radio, they’ve got a new CD in the pipeline, and their website should be up and running soon.

Good things in general have happened to Third Frame since their formation, not the least of which is having had the chance to play numerous national acts such as Snoop Dogg, Nellie, Sir Mix-A-Lot and George Clinton. With the release of Roped Off Section, Third Frame have begun to move in a new direction.

“Even though it’s just an EP, it’s a taste of thing to come,” Quandt said. “What makes it different is we tried to make more songs, rather than just rap. We’re having fun and trying not to be serious. We just talk about what we know, make them into songs that are catchy, and people seem to like it. It seems to pay off.”

Third Frame have been around since 1997. Quandt got into rapping for a rather simple reason à “I do hip-hop because I love it, and I can’t play guitar.”

“We’ve got the template for success. We’re just gonna roll with it and see what happens.” (Mark Hunter)
