Best Acoustic Performers
* On the ballot |
You could say Sunny Taylor had an off year at the Whammys, winning only two - for best singer songwriter and best pop performer. But that would be wrong. It would be right if she hadn't won in each of the categories for which she was nominated. But she did win both categories. Now that I've thoroughly confused myself, the one thing I can say without muddled thought is it was good to see Taylor rock out at the awards ceremony. After all, Taylor is best known for her intimate solo work. Her acoustic shows are filled with an odd mix of self-deprecation and stunning talent. And while she did perform acoustically at the Whammys (we think, we're not entirely sure), and performed well as usual, when she strapped on her electric guitar and cranked through a few with the Migraines, she showed that she's not a one-trick pony. She's only been plugging in for about four months, and at first, she said, she was nervous about it. But from the sound of it, going electric is something she will be doing more often. "I like it," she said. "There's more intensity, more dynamics. And you can be really loud." Even though she now has a record-tying 14 Whammy Awards on her wall (a total she shares with Blue Moon Boys guitarist Kenny Taylor), and has won every Whammy Award for which she has been nominated over the past seven years, Taylor says winning the singer songwriter Whammy with the competition she faced surprised her. "There have been times in the past when I thought, okay, I'll probably get one," she said, "but this year with Duane Eby and Dave Todoran on the ballot, I didn't think I'd have a chance. It's humbling." Right on. |
