* On the ballot | When G-Money was a kid, he spent a lot of time listening to his mother’s rhythm and blues records and watching her friends perform at house parties. When he was five-years-old, he worked up a routine of James Brown hits and began singing at those parties. Now, nearly three decades later, those early experiences have paid off with the Best R&B Whammy. “I’ve been singing pretty close to 25 years,” he says. “I love performing in front of people. I’m overwhelmed to win.” G-Money is no stranger to performing. He’s a very visible singer and guitar player. He currently hosts G-Money’s All Star Blues Jam each Monday at the Latch String and it seems he was always at Jimmy G’s Hot Spot running the blues jam there when that fine bar was going strong He’s done stints with the Joey O Band and his own G-Money Band from which he fronted from1993-96. His current band, The Fabulous Rhythm Kids, which includes Dave Zych, Mark Stein and Scott Byler, plays frequently at area clubs and at Legion and Eagles clubs. “Jimmy G was about the only club that would hire me when the G-Money Band first got going,” he says. “I think everybody thought I was some sort of gangsta rapper or something.” He says his name, which he got while working at Wooden Nickel, caused the confusion. The confusion didn’t last long and soon he was jamming with local blues legends bassist Lee Lewis and drummer Terry “Bud” Smith. Lewis spends his summers touring with Australian harmonica player Harper and Smith plays with Larry Garner. Money says he feels honored to win the Whammy, especially considering the talent of fellow nominees Chris Worth, R.B. Stiles, and Ty Causey. “With all those cats I feel really fortunate to win,” he says. “And I want to thank Doug and the whatzup staff, Big Nick Crickmore for all his support, and God.” |
