A popular bumper sticker says, “Punk’s Not Dead.” And one would have to agree with that sentiment, as Fort Wayne’s favorite punk band, the Migraines, move into the next area of success. On January 23, while playing at a showcase lead singer Shawn Browning called “an American Idol kind of thing,” they impressed Blue Jankey Entertainment so much that the band walked away with a management deal. Blue Jankey is associated with Universal Music Group. Needless to say, the Migraines are excited about this, as Blue Jankey has a reputation for getting bands to the table very quickly. The group will record a demo in Nashville sometime this year. The good news comes after a period of not booking shows for a while. “We stopped pursuing people,” says Browning. “When the bookings come in, the bookings come in.” And Browning also let a higher power do some of the work. “Let’s see whatever doors God opens for us.” Turns out He didn’t do such a bad job. The band’s latest CD, Endangered Species, touches on the idea that nothing is permanent. The disc is available at FYE and Karma stores in the Midwest and at Migraines shows. The Migraines, who seem to be busier than ever now, were even doing backup band duties for Sunny Taylor. Not surprisingly, that’s done. Browning says the management deal prevents the band from backing Taylor, and he wanted her to be able to find new band personnel as soon as possible. The Migraines, which formed back in 1993, have more than 30 appearances on tape, vinyl or CD, have opened for Cracker, played at the world famous CBGB’s in New York City and recorded a live CD there. a A new CD, Odzenenz will be released this year. When Browning accepted the best punk band Whammy for the Migraines, he was typically humble and thankful. “We thank God for maximizing our limited abilities,” he said, shortly after stepping offstage. “We’re really excited to win any award.” “There are so many bands out there who are better than we are ... so many great bands in Fort Wayne ... comparing and picking the best is impossible,” he said. “We’re honored to be recognized by our musical peers and music fans in Fort Wayne.” During the evening, Browning urged the packed house at Columbia Street West to support local music, not just the Migraines. But he did have a teensy request for anyone reading this and asked it be printed in big letters: “NEXT YEAR VOTE FOR US FOR FAVORITE ROCK BAND.” |
