Spike & The Bulldogs

Just so you know, if you are going to join Spike and the Bulldogs on their annual cruise next year, you’ll be pleased to know they don’t use Carnival Cruises. So if you do lose your lunch, it’s probably because you’ll be having a really good time. As will the several hundred other Spike and the Bulldogs fans who will be joining you. The band, which just returned from their 12th cruise, does public and private performances while on board. Approached by a travel agent years ago, the band sent video and audio tapes to the cruise line, which liked what they saw.

whatzup‘s readers liked what they heard, as the band won yet another Whammy award Thursday as the favorite local oldies band.

Wayne Neukom, one of the band members said upon accepting the Whammy, “being 53 years old doesn’t mean you have to sit at home and watch television.” He’s right. Much healthier to be in a band and play the kind of music the whole family can listen to and not blush.

This is the second year in a row the band has won the award.

Val Asay said he wasn’t expecting his band to win the award, but he was hoping they would. “You don’t see the people that vote for you - they’ve seen you some place. It’s not a certain group; not just the musicians and club owners.”

Asay is proud of his band’s repertoire, which he classifies as “pure oldies rock n’ roll. “We only do from 1955-1966.”

After 1966, said Asay, rock got heavier. Even the Beatles, who seemed clean-cut if long-haired, were drawn into the psychedelic phase rock entered in the late 60s.

This summer, the band will play several shows and expects their latest CD, Live Again, to sell well.

“It should be pretty hot,” says Asay, who adds there is yet another CD in the works, although he wouldn’t talk about it. “It’s kinda hush-hush,” he says.

Live Again features a “pretty good variety of music,” says Asay, with tunes such as “Time Won’t Let Me,” “Rock Around the Clock” and “I Fought the Law.”

After 22 years of performing, it’s nice to know that the majority of band members have been “with us for quite a while,” says Asay. Maybe that is why the band continues to be so popular year after year. Asay estimates his group attracts fans in the 50-60 age range, but noted, “audiences are getting younger all the time.” Maybe it’s because of the family-friendly music. What other group welcomes people from babies to grandparents? What other group enjoys it as much as Spike and the Bulldogs? Don’t expect them to stop rockin’ round the clock anytime soon.

“It’s been fun,” said Asay. “It’s still fun.”
