Conley & Forbing

Mike Conley and John Forbing hold court every Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Columbia Street West’s happy hour. During those two hours they put on a show that is as good as it is entertaining. Watching Forbing and Conley play guitars together is like watching Socrates and Plato play with ideas. That’s accurate to a degree. After all, Forbing is (was) Conley’s guitar teacher.

“I love playing with John,” Conley said “He’s one of my mentors and a really well respected performer.”

Conley could have added busy, too. Forbing, who’s been playing guitar since he was nine (he’s 45) played in some 15 bands last year. “I’ve had to cut it down a bit,” he said. “I make my living playing guitar and teaching.”

Both Conley and Forbing were bot pleased and surprised to win the award for Best Live Duo, though they’ve won it both times it’s been a category. Conley perhaps more so than Forbing. Forbing thinks that, because he’s taught so many people to play, he must be getting votes from former and current students. “Still,” Forbing said, “it’s nice to be recognized along with my peers.”

For Forbing, playing and teaching are complementary. “By playing live I get to do what my students want to do,” he said. “I’m get to play through a sound system in front of an audience. It’s real-world application of what I teach.”
