Dave Pagan has a good streak going. Currently working as a solo acoustic performer under the moniker Dave P’s Love Jams, Pagan won the Whammy for Best Hip Hop artist. It’s the same award his former band, Strut Train, won the previous three years. And while he’s appreciative of the recognition, it’s a category he’s not sure he belongs in. “It’s awesome to be recognized,” Pagan says, “I just feel there’s other people that deserve it.” Pagan says while he does rap, he’s primarily a guitar player. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Pagan made the move to Indiana with his family several years ago. He grew up listening to rappers and soon found he had a knack for it. But he also started playing guitar. “I do so much more than rap. I’m a guitar player before I’m a rapper.” But as a guitar player and rapper, Pagan gets his share of guest appearances with other local bands. Which, he says, is why he won. “I love jamming with other bands. I jam with the Wailhounds a lot, and Hoochie Mama Get Down. I’m not the best rapper, I just get seen more. That’s how I got the hip hop award. I’ve gotten up and jammed with just about every band.” Now that’s he’s been voted best hip hop artist, Pagan says he’d better put out a hip hop CD. He’s got lots of songs, he says, but not all of them include rapping. In the mean time, he’ll have his Whammy hanging between his pictures of Jimi Hendrix and Strut Train to inspire him. |
