Pop 'N' Fresh

Ted and Pamela Brown just added another Whammy to their wall. As the mom and pop of Pop 'N' Fresh, the pair have teamed with the rest of their band to win the Best Blues Performer category five years in a row. With son Travis Brown, Jeremy Sells and Steve Jugloff Pop 'N' Fresh are a fixture in Fort Wayne. For the last 12 years, anyway. That's when the band made its first appearance at the 1993 Bluesfest. Since then, they've developed a fan base that rivals any in town. With a quirky, comfortable stage presence that elicits fresh-baked feelings, Browns et al have turned their show into a tasty art form. And that it hasn't gone stale in 12 years is a testament to their skill.

"I feel really blessed," Brown said at the Whammy shindig. "It's a real compliment considering the competition."

Brown said he sometimes wonders why they're in the blues category, when the band generally plays a wide variety of material. "A lot of gigs just end up being jam sessions because other musicians we know come on stage and start playing," he said.

The Brown family also performs as Mom 'N' Pop 'N' Fresh, a slightly different, acoustic version.

Pop 'N' Fresh are working on a new CD of all original songs, mostly roots stuff, Brown said. "There's some old timey and old R&B type stuff, too. It'll be a hodge-podge of styles."

Also, the band is getting a website together.

"It just does my soul good that we have fans who think about us enough to vote for us," Brown said.
