Go Dog Go

For a band that's been together only since February 2000 (and is not exactly rich in musical heritage among three of its four members), Go Dog Go made quite a splash by winning their first Whammy for Best Rock Band — Covers, a spot held by the better-known Wailhounds for the last two years.

With only guitarist Chris Dodds having a background in playing rock ‘n’ roll, the band members started as the classic garage band as guitarist Matt Kelley, bassist Eric Federspiel and drummer Mark Winters got together to learn their instruments and have a little fun on weeikends. Winters said it reached the point where he had to decide whether to learn his chosen instrument or sell the damn things.

Day jobs are pretty typical for a hard-working cover band, as well, including secure network engineer at Verizon, account manager at LaBov & Beyond and owner of One Lucky Guitar web design company.

Creating an ecletic set list out of songs and groups they personally liked, Go Dog Go had its start playing at the former Katie's Kapers ("be sure to mention the people there; they'll know what it means," Dodds said) and have played at Columbia Street West. And they have a challenge: If you can find another band that includes as its inspirations Weezer, the Strokes, Old 97s, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Queen, Cheap Trick and Willie Nelson, they'd like to know about it.
