The honor of being the first band to win the Best Oldies Performer Whammy went to a band that's been plying the oldies waters for nearly 20 years. Lead singer Val Asay was suitably impressed. It's really cool. We've been playing so long, it's one thing when your peers appreciate what you do, but it's fun to know that people are willing to vote for you, Asay said. The band also includes Pete Van Bibber, guitarist; Carl Snyder, keyboards, Jim Heimann, saxophone and Bernie Stone, drummer. Phil McDonald is the long-time sound man. The band plays what Asay describes as basic roots rock, songs from the 50s and 60s, and rarely fails to find an appreciative audience. In fact, in recent years, the mix of that audience has begun to change: Younger people are showing up to groove on the sounds that their parents grew up on. The band recently returned from a Caribbean cruise, a lucrative sideline that most bands would kill to have. The band and their fans fly down to Florida, board a ship and enjoy a rock 'n' roll cruise for three or four nights. A company called Tickets to Paradise is arranging the next cruise and can be reached at 800-283-7756. The year 2002 was a little rough on Spike & The Bulldogs. Asay suffered a heart attack and two equipment vans were involved in traffic accidents, the last involving a collision with a deer. But 2003 has started a whole lot better. |
