Sunny Taylor continues to hold Fort Wayne and whatzup readers under sway. Taylor won her fifth Whammy for Best Live Solo Performer. She has a lock on the category. And she has a roomful of Whammys. “I think this is going to look good on my wall,” she said. “I have like a whole ego corner set up for just the Whammies.” Don’t be fooled. Taylor’s ego ain’t got nothin’ on her talent and poise. She’s been wowing Fort Wayne audiences for more than seven years with polished, thoughtful, original songs that are almost as pretty as she is. Though billed as a solo performer, Taylor often plays with guitarist Matt Sturm, as well as a variety of full-blown bands. In late 2001 Taylor made a trip to Louisville with her band to take a stab at the big time through a showcase for a group of Warner Brothers Records representatives. Things didn’t go as well as she would have liked. Warner Brothers loss is our gain. Someday, some recording executive will wake up and whisk our Sunny away. Until then, she’s ours. At least when she’s out on the stage. And when she isn’t, she’ll be in her Whammy room. “When I’m sitting in my ego corner I look at the Whammies and I say ‘I’m good. I’m strong. I am … Sunny Taylor.” |
