Pop 'N' Fresh have a stranglehold on their category, having won the Whammy for Best Blues Performer for four straight years. In fact, blues fans like their comfort level. Lil's Funk-n' Blues Revue won the award in the previous two years. The lineup hasn't changed much, and that’s not surprising considering the band is the melding of two famies: Pops Ted Brown and Jim Sells and their sons, Travis Brown and Jeremy Sells. Pam Brown also performs, along with keyboardist Steve Jugaloff. The band performs just about every weekend and plays their good-time version of the blues naturally. For nearly a decade, they've honed their chops on a variety of music, including rockabilly and swing. After playing a set as the second of two blues bands on the Best of 2002 Awards Show stage (Troolee Dangerous Blues Revue being the other), Ted Brown relaxed in his chef's outfit — complete with hat — to thank his fans once again. “It's a pretty good feeling to win the Whammy,” Brown said. “We just go out there to have a good time, and we hope everyone in the audience does, too. We're not overly serious about it, but we’ve been enjoying every minute of the last 10 years.” Brown added that the band is working on a CD, that will include a couple of songs written by Travis Brown. “It's just hard to find time to get everybody together to record,” Ted Brown said. |
