As far as Steve Wright is concerned, the best things bands do is break up.
That’s because there’s always one or two guys who end up with the equipment. Wright is one of those guys. When his band The Alibi broke up abut a decade ago, he ended up with the sound equipment. Who would have guessed that left-over sound equipment would eventually lead to a Whammy for Best Sound Technician? Well, not Wright. Apart from the fact that Whammies didn’t exist when he got into running sound, Wright’s appraisal of the competition in the category left little room for his hopes of winning. “There’s definitely more than a couple of guys I respect that are a lot more talented than I am, that’s for sure,” Wright said. Wright’s move into sound came about following the demise of The Alibi and its gig as house band at Piere’s. That was some 10 years ago. Wright now runs the sound for Club Atlantis, in addition to playing guitar with Fawn Liebowitz. Running sound is no picnic, especially when you’re constantly dealing with different bands and trying to make their equipment and playing sound good. To that end, Wright developed a philosophy that takes some of the pressure off him and puts it squarely onto the musicians. “I try to make it so everyone in the band is heard,” Wright said. “If the band sucks, they’re going to be heard. If the band is good, they’ll be heard. The biggest thing is to give them enough monitors so they can hear themselves. That’s very important. My goal is to have them ask me to turn down the monitors.” Well, Steve, you’re coming through loud and clear. |
