| Much like the Grammy Awards, we at the Whammy Awards have pretty loose rules when it comes to the category of new band. homeless j, for example, have been around since April 2000 and have been noticed by big record labels such as Universal Republic, the people who signed Jettingham to a national recording contract. If you want to get technical, two band members, brothers Jon and Lance Hill, had earlier played together in the Channelsurfers. Brad Amstutz and Chad Van Meter had played in Homeless Jesus. When the four finally got together, they became homeless j. Although they haven’t released a full-length CD yet, you can hear their sound on Essentials Vol. 5 in the song, “B-Fly.” The band describes its sound as “modern rock or art/indie rock.” Their influences range from Leonard Cohen to The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Throw in other heroes such as Bruce Cockburn, Jeff Buckley, Deftones, Tool and George Clinton, and you have the eclectic mix of homeless j. The strong rhythm section of the Hill brothers on bass and drums, respectively, and the slightly distorted guitar work of Van Meter and Amstutz give homeless j their punch, onstage and in the studio. They played a superb set at the Whammy show. The fact that the Hills are brothers and know each other’s playing intimately provides a unique opportunity for the band and for their fans. |
