“It’s like being paid to party.” That’s how Brian Strahm describes his job as deejay at Piere’s. And it’s that happy combination that likely led to Strahm, or X-Man, being named Best Deejay/Turntabalist for the second year. Or both years the category has existed. This year, Strahm has another role at Piere’s; he’s also a manager. Sandwiched between a three-year gig in the Marine Corps, Strahm has worked the turntable and fog machine at Piere’s for eight years. Time has not diminished his enthusiasm for what might be described as the best job in town. “People think of the deejay as an entertainer, but we do a lot more than that. We’re in charge of the room from before the band shows up till after they’re done. If the deejay isn’t doing his job, people don’t have as good a time. If he is, they enjoy themselves so much they want to come back,” Strahm said. A good deejay is a club’s most valuable asset. He sets the tone for the evening. If the band is a hit, he continues the vibe long after they leave the stage and keeps people dancing and drinking till the doors close. If the band is a dud, the deejay has to take over and rescue the night — and the night’s profits — for the club owner. It’s a responsibility Strahm does not take lightly, just like any good deejay. He’s also been known to come down from his aerie in the sky and join the party, including at least one memorable evening as the silhouette dancer. Guess you had to be there. Come to think of it, being there is not a bad idea. |
