David Todoran & The Mobile Homewreckers

David (known around whatzup simply as David) is a multi-talented guy as befits his two Whammy Awards, one for leading the Mobile Homewreckers as Best Country Band and another as Best Male Vocalist.

Singer/guitar player/harmonica player/substitute teacher/ whatzup contributor of finely crafted essays on music and musicians. Is there anything he can’t do? Perhaps, but we’re afraid to ask.

The Mobile Homewreckers won the Best Country Band category last year as well, despite not being a country band in the modern sense. They play a mixture of modern folk music and roots rock n’ roll called Americana, style of music that has gained great popularity in recent years as a sort of reaction to corporate rock and the dreaded hip hop/metal.

As played by the Homewreckers (including Brad Kuhns, Kevin Jackson, Bob Craven and John Fecher), country means the music of guys like Dwight Yoakam and lyrics and melodies inspired by guys like Steve Earle and John Prine. It’s painfully honest, evocative music that stays close to real life with all its ups and downs. It also relies on the superb musicianship of the Homewreckers; Todoran has credited the addition of Craven on steel pedal guitar for completing the band’s sound.

Speaking of sound, Todoran has made a career from creating his own. In May 2001, he toured Europe for two weeks, playing with Michelle Shocked, Victoria Williams and Jim White. The Fort Wayne native is very big in Europe. Two of his CDs, Under My Skin and Solstice, have been released there by Berlin’s ulfTONE Music. That label also included the single of the same name on a recent compilation CD and Italy’s Buscadero magazine named Under My Skin one of the best CD releases of the year. Todoran with Ian Spanic produced those CDs. They are prime examples of Todoran’s maturity as a songwriter and singer, a northeast Indiana Steve Earle. One look at Todoran’s patented stage look of black leather jacket and swept back hair puts you on notice this is one performer who takes his music as seriously as he wants you to.
