Fawn Liebowitz put a bug in the ear of Fort Wayne music lovers in 2001. And for that, the septet was rewarded with the Whammy for Best Rock CD for their sophomore effort, Bug.
The award came as a shock to the band, which kicked off the evening’s festivities with a set that included songs from their first CD, Loyalty, and a few from Bug as well. Frontman Paul Stephens summed up the band’s reaction. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “There should have been a camera on my face at that moment. When we won, we just kept looking at each other.” Stephens said he and his band mates, Steve Wright, guitar; Kent Klee, drums; Susan Plumb, vocals; Jeff Adams, saxes; Todd Jordan, keyboards and Tim Beeler, bass, went into the evening just wanting to hang out, play and see the bands they don’t get to see. The award was a bonus to an already positive experience. And it may just keep the new material rolling. “Kent and I have been abstractly talking about writing another album,” Stephens said. “We’re going to write another one for sure now. This was the impetus that put us over the edge.” Fawn Liebowitz are essentially the reformation of the band 2 Ton Heavy Thing. Stephens said the reason for forming Fawn was to have an outlet for the songs they wrote as 2 Ton. Bug has been selling well online at Amazon.com, Stephens said, and the recognition for the CD brought by the Whammy is icing on the cake. The additional two Whammys won by band members Klee (Best Percussionist) and Wright (Best Sound Technician) might just be the candles. “We really like our album, but the appreciation for the band from others is great,” he said. |
