The story of Pop ‘N’ Fresh must be well-known by now. How Pops Ted Brown and Jim Sells raised two musical sons, Travis and Jeremy, respectively, who went on to become the Fresh. What is equally well-known is The Little Band That Could’s stanglehold on the Best Blues Band category. They have won for three consecutive years, after a two-year run by Diamond Lil’s Funk-N’ Blues Revue. One of the most interesting things about any Whammy Awards show is what Ted Brown will be wearing. Last year, it was a black suit and natty black bowler hat. This year, he and wife Pamela Brown were wearing top hats. Really. At least one musician performing onstage rubbed Ted Brown’s top hat for luck. It’s luck any performer might wish would rub off on them. Pop ‘N’ Fresh has been a mainstay of the local blues and R&B scene for nearly a decade, although their beginnings go back to the 60s when the elder Brown and Sells played for a psychedelic band known as After the Rain. Really. Their sons took to the music, and by the 80s were ready to take their places onstage. Much of their enduring popularity comes from the band’s versatility and expertise in a number of musical styles, despite their success in the Best Blues category. Pop ‘N’ Fresh can play anything from blues to rockabilly to swing — and do a good job at it. They may not be flashy, and they may not have the energy these days of a Strut Train or a Blue Moon Boys, but Pop ‘N’ Fresh refuses to give up. They play enough to satisfy their fans and to earn them new ones, of all ages and of all musical preferences. It’s what keeps the pops and everyone else fresh. |
