Blue Moon Boys

Kenny Taylor called the day after the 2000 Best of Awards show from a hotel room somewhere near Detroit, where he and the Blue Moon Boys were performing the night of the show. They had kept in touch with Fort Wayne by phone on the progress of the show, and already knew of their two.

"We celebrated in our own special way," Taylor reported.

This enormously popular band spends a lot of time on the road, so it wasn’t surprising they missed the first-ever Whammies and still managed to win major awards. They’ve been together since late 1994.

"For us winning the live award, that’s because of (lead singer) Nic Roulette," Taylor said. "For the originals award, Nic and I write a lot. We’re pretty prolific in a variety of styles. That’s been an advantage and a disadvantage for us so far."

Because of their wide-ranging talents and styles, Taylor ruefully admitted, "we’ve done nothing but confuse people."

"We put out a rockabilly album without any rockabilly songs on it. I thought we were a rock n’ roll band. I don’t know what we are," he said.

Maybe the boys celebrated a little too much, because Taylor was being hard on himself and the Blue Moon Boys. Their fans know who they are and what to expect: full-bore rock n’ roll in its many forms, led by the frenetic Roulette, one of the most talented frontmen ever to come out of Indiana.

To help matters along, Taylor is working with Tom Tempel to create a new CD from three hours’ worth of music left over from the 1995 sessions which resulted in the CD Cover Tunes. The new CD will be released by a record label in Finland, and will be available in the United States. The unreleased songs include original tunes and -very traditional- covers of rockabilly songs. Taylor also said it was a tribute to original bass player Keith Brewer, who died in 1998.

Combine all this with the band’s many releases, and there’s really no excuse for being confused as to who the Blue Moon Boys are.
