Winning three Whammies made this now-veteran performer "feel like a million bucks." Sunny Taylor joined Strut Train as the only triple Whammy Award
winner of the evening.
Playing solo since 1996 - at a less-than-memorable first appearance in the unlikely venue of Zollner Stadium - Taylor has quietly won a place in the hearts
of local music fans for her live work around town and for her recordings.
"I was raised listening to Motown, classic rock, the Beatles, a lot of oldies," Taylor said. "I don’t know if these were influences, but they sure gave me an ear
for music."
In addition to her shows, Taylor credited WEJE-FM and whatzup for supporting the local music scene, creating a tide which has raised many career boats,
including hers.
In the next year or two, however, Taylor feels she is facing some important decisions. She will have to concentate on having more of her own songs published
and decide whether she wants to be mainly a songwriter or a writer/performer.
"I think I would prefer to be a performer, but I’m a really anxious person. I don’t know if performing is my thing. I’m anxious about getting shows, and I’m
nervous about performing. Maybe I’m better off being a writer, because performing makes me nervous," Taylor said.
On the other hand, the very business of singing and songwriting makes this three-time winner excited. Show business is a very fluid industry, she explained, in
which a performer can be on top one moment, and on the bottom the next. It’s even more challenging to a talented person such as Taylor than getting up in
front of an audience, however appreciative it may be.
"I guess wherever God wants me to go I’ll go," she said, "as long as it’s in music."
